What's Cooking?
The program was initiated in the winter and spring of 2008 when Project CHEF taught 600 children about healthy food choices and how to prepare the food for themselves. The program visited 10 schools and involved 20 teachers, 200 parent volunteers and many volunteers from the community.
During the 2008-2009 school year the program visited 19 Vancouver schools, reaching approximately 1100 children, 38 teachers and up to 600 parent volunteers.
During the 2009-2010 school year Project CHEF ran for 19 weeks, reaching approximately 1100 children. In addition to the regular program, in 2010 Project CHEF implemented the Project CHEF In Residence Program where children from kindergarten to grade seven learned in our classroom 'kitchens'. In the In Residence Program, healthy eating becomes a school focus and the goals of Project CHEF are integrated through class lessons and school activities.
Registration for the 2010-2011 school year will take place in September, 2010. If you are interested in having your school participate in Project CHEF, a meeting for interested teachers will be held early in the next school year. The number of participating schools will be dependent on funding.
